SELECTIVIDAD EXTREMADURA. How to answer all questions in PAU.

SELECTIVIDAD

QUESTION NUMBER 1. Writing a COMPOSITION.

Essay structure:
 1st paragraph: INTRODUCTION (Thesis statement)
2nd paragraph: BODY of the essay.
3rd paragraph: CONCLUSION (Summarize. Do not add extra information).

No contractions (shouldn't = should not, won't = will not)

Do not use “dead”, empty words (for example, thing, stuff, good, very…).

USE OF VOCABULARY: Do not just use the simplest expressions that come to mind first, and avoid repeating the same words if you can. Try to use a good range of vocabulary.
Vary the length of your sentences. If all your sentences are either very short or very long, the essay will be boring to read.
Use transitions and connectors to help you move from one sentence to another...
Use some of the advanced grammar structures you have learnt throughout the two Bachillerato years.
Keep one eye on the clock and leave yourself a minute or so to check your work. We all make mistakes, and if you can correct some of yours, you will save valuable marks.

QUESTION NUMBER 2. Reading Comprehension.
Start answering the question straightforwardly (SHORT ANSWER FOLLOWED BY A FULL STOP: Yes or No plus the appropriate auxiliary verb; or if the question starts off with "according to the text", use it in the answer; besides, WHY QUESTIONS are answered with BECAUSE.)
Try to use your own words but use the text as a pretext. Use the vocabulary from the text trying to enlarge it by adding or removing adjectives or maybe using synonyms.
Try not to give more information than the one given in the text, otherwise you can make mistakes.
You can justify your yes/no answer and your own words with a direct quotation from the text. Do not forget QUOTATION MARKS in such a case (" ").
To avoid monotony, you should vary the signal phrases you use to integrate quotations from Selectividad texts, as in these examples:
In the words of the author
As the author has noted,
As the text points out:
The text points out that
The author claims that
The text says...
The text states...
The text recognises...
According to the text, ...
If you look close at paragraph two, the text clearly establishes...

Remember you will be marked according to your understanding of the question,
accuracy of the answer, and correct grammar expression.

QUESTION NUMBER 3. COMMUNICATIVE SITUATION.

FIRST, you need to identify The Communicative Functions (that is, the reasons to communicate).
Set the situation to the reader, do not make any assumptions.
Try not to make a dialogue.
Address the person in question straightforwardly, in the second person.
Try to avoid reported speech.
Use the structures we have been learning accordingly.

QUESTION NUMBER 4. GRAMMAR TRANSFORMATION.

The mastery of grammatical competence is checked in this question.

When you finish the whole exam:
1. Check your spelling.
2. Check your grammar.
3. Read your composition again.
4. Make sure each sentence has a subject.
5. Make sure your subjects and verbs agree with each other.
6. Check the verb tenses of each sentence.
7. Make sure that each sentence makes sense.
